PAARL CELEBRATES FEMALE WINEMAKERS DURING WOMEN’S MONTH

Drakenstein Tourism is using National Women’s Month in August to pay tribute to the female winemakers working in the region with a series of #winewednesday engagements.  There are currently 18 female winemakers and winemaker assistants working at amongst others prestigious wine producers such as Nederburg, KWV, Boland Cellar and Fairview.

According to Annelize Stroebel of the Drakenstein Local Tourism Association, which incorporates the Paarl Wine Route, Women’s Month provides the perfect platform to honour Drakenstein’s female winemakers.  “This is an opportunity to salute them for the stellar work that they are doing.  The fact that we have so many female winemakers is a fairly small region is definitely proof that this traditionally male-dominated industry is changing.  #winewednesdays will be fun, interactive engagements with members of the media, bloggers and social influencers to showcase these fabulous women in wine in our valley and to introduce them and their wines to wine enthusiasts,” mentions Stroebel.

Stroebel further explains that these women can also play an important role in terms of community development.  “Wine tourism plays an extremely important role in the marketing of Paarl and Wellington as destinations and the presence of so many women in the winemaking process augers well for the future.  It is important to highlight the achievements of these women as they can serve as role models for the younger generation.  These winemakers are strong, professional individuals, who have set aside old stereotypes and through their achievements are able to inspire a whole community of young girls,” concludes Stroebel.
